G. T. Farrell

Day of the Dead

G. T. Farrell is a former homicide detective whose career links him to Brandon Walker and to The Last Chance, the invitation-only organization that takes on cold cases. Though not a close friend of Brandon’s, Farrell’s professional history and recommendation help draw him back into investigative work after he has left the police department.

Identity and Earlier Cases

When Brandon worked homicide for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Farrell held a similar position in neighboring Pinal County. They stayed in occasional contact, but the relationship was not especially close. Farrell had also been a young campus police officer at Arizona State University when Ursula Brinker was murdered; over the years, he remained in touch with Ursula’s family, Hedda Brinker and Toby Brinker.

Farrell later became part of the group that came to Diana Ladd’s aid when Andrew Philip Carlisle, newly released from prison, made a nearly successful attempt to silence her permanently. The episode gives Farrell a place in Brandon’s earlier professional history as well as in the network of investigators and allies that surrounds the novel’s cases.

The Last Chance and Brandon’s Invitation

Farrell is a founding member of The Last Chance, a nonprofit that seeks out mostly retired police investigators and forensic experts to help with cases local agencies are unwilling or unable to pursue further. Its members volunteer their expertise; the organization covers expenses, laboratory work, and support staff. Monthly meetings, usually in Phoenix and sometimes in Denver, give families and investigators a place to present cold cases for possible action.

As the group takes shape, Farrell tells Ralph Ames that Brandon might be interested in joining. Brandon initially meets the approach with suspicion, but learning that Farrell is involved changes the tenor of the invitation. When Ames confirms that Farrell wanted him included, Brandon accepts and says Farrell is owed a favor. The next meeting is scheduled for Denver, marking Brandon’s entry into the organization Farrell helped establish.

Narrative Role

Farrell is presented through his relationships and professional history rather than through an extended personal arc. His significance lies in the bridge he provides between Brandon’s past in law enforcement and a new effort to investigate neglected cases. The novel also places him within a continuing circle of people connected to prior investigations: his occasional contact with Brandon, his ties to Hedda and Toby, and his role in the response to the threat against Diana all precede his recommendation of Brandon to The Last Chance.
